I've been on a HUGE Smallville reading kick. And then this past weekend, I saw Superman Returns. And then I started actually watching season 1 of Smallville. So now my brain has been taken over by Superman.

When I first started reading anything about Superman, it was based on Smallville. And I started out with Clark/Lex, because I'm a sucker for enemies-turned-lovers, apparently. So, I'm kind of a LOT predisposed to see Lex in a positive light.

And then I watched Superman Returns. For the price of free, it was completely worth it. I felt like the whole narrative arc business was a bit weak, but I was somehow still satisfied at the end. Things I really liked:
- Brandon Routh (played Clark Kent/Superman) is SUPER pretty. Like. A lot.
- I was probably thinking this because [livejournal.com profile] apetslife put the idea into my head, but Superman really did come off as very Other (as opposed to feeling very human) which I thought was neat.
- the little "I can't believe this is happening/I'm doing this/I'm in this position" smile on Supermans face when he deals with the people he's rescued is SO FREAKING CUTE. And it comes across LOUD and CLEAR.
- Somehow, I expected Lois Lane to be a little less Soft, Repressed, and Damaged and more Hard-Boiled Reporter With A Heart Of Gold.
- Lex Luthor made me squeak with GLEE! He's actually everything I could have wanted from a Lex Luthor. Rich and careless with it, not-so-secretly NERDY, the BLARING CLASSICAL MUSIC OMG, moral ambiguity All Over The Place, and the Look on his FACE when Lois walks in while he's brushing his teeth!!!

And now, I've watched a couple episodes of Smallville, and ZOMG. The premise is So Cool. But the execution is Sadly Lacking. To be perfectly honest, it's not quite the FLAMING SHIT-FILLED TRAINWRECK I was expecting, based on everything I've ever heard about it, but it's still not anywhere near good. It's definitely aimed at the preteen/teenager audiance. ANd WTF is up with Lana Lang? But, in this case, my lowered expectations are a HUGE help, as this way, I don't expect much from the show and can just make grabby hands as the screen when Lex walks around being Hotzor and Carelessly Rich and Wanting Approval. I think the writers (on purpose or otherwise) ended up putting Lex in a very interesting position with this show. The way he is shown (granted, this is just based on the first 5 episodes) as really wanting the Kent's approval, as trying really hard to figure out the right thing to do despite having absolutely no frame of reference makes me like him So Freaking Much. And, it makes for a very interesting story in my head, that (according to my flist) as he is continually denied that approval and as the Kents are unable to separate him from his father, he tries less and less to do the right thing, ultimately making the Kents complicit with Lex's father in turning him into the Evil Mastermind with canon has destined him to become.

But pffffffffffffft on canon. In my head, the All Live Happily Ever After, and Lex finally finds someone to pet his bald head and feed him bonbons and tell him how much they love him.
