So, I haven't talked too much about this, because it involves me over-identifying with music again, and I feel kinda dumb talking about that kind of thing.

Ever since I heard all of Pretty. Odd., I've been in a one-sided fight with them. It's not that I don' t like the music, its that it's not what I wanted from them. A Fever You Can't Sweat Out is young, hungry, and angry. It's raw and desperate and upset. It doesn't have anything figured out and it knows it. It's bitter and cynical and confused and hurt. It's frantic music to jump around too until you are too tired to move and your throat is raw. These are all things I identify with. I don't know jack shit about life, and I'm not really okay with that, and I'm still young and desperate and confused, but if I can yell about taking the fight out of the kid, it lets me know that someone somewhere felt a little like I do sometimes. In contrast, Pretty. Odd is lyrical, metaphorical, and relaxed. If not happy, it's mellow and chill and okay with life, even if things aren't the best. It's dreamy and whimsical and melodic. It has enough figured out to be satisfied. Which isn't to say that I don't have my moments of whimsy and spend most of my time daydreaming. But what I expected from Panic was more catharsis and what I got was NOT.

But after Saturday night, I forgave them. In no small part because I got to jump up and down and yell along to some of the older songs, but also because I got to see how much they do love their new music. And I can't be mad at them for figuring their shit out, even as I haven't.

And Ryan talking in his monotone about how excited he is to play the tambourine is pretty much completely adorable. I GIVE, RYAN ROSS, YOU WIN.

Now for some pictures. MY OTP, LET ME SHOW YOU IT.

I SEE YOUR SMILE THERE RYAN ROSS!

I feel that this pictures really conveys Ryan's Monotone Excitement at playing the tambourine.

I like how this one is set in a magical realism type AU.

In conclusion, Panic will never be a band-of-my-heart, and they never were. But they sure as hell gave me a good evening.

Also playing was Phantom Planet, the Hush Sound, and Motion City Soundtrack. I was kinda dragging, and also, started out really far back, so I have no pictures of any of these guys. whoops.

The lead singer from Phantom Planet leaves me completely CHARMED at all times. He is excellent at stage banter and talking to the crowd. I also really enjoy the drummer, mostly because he's got one of those very interesting faces that isn't attractive by most definitions, but is just so interesting. Also, I feel like he's got this look of long-suffering tolerance down PAT, which I can only imagine comes from living in close quarters with the lead singer. You know he's a handful. And he (the lead singer) totally finished off the set by crowd surfing about halfway to the merch table. It was pretty fucking amazing. I'll see them live any time.

The Hush Sound were awesome as per usual, though Greta's mic was fucked up. They played Wine Red and some of my other old favorites and some of my new favorites. I danced my ass off.

Motion City Soundtrack made me wish I knew any of their music. This was also the portion of the evening where I was stuck behind two super-tall dudes and their equally tall girlfriends. But the crowd kept doing this amazing thing where people would leave, and also everyone would take a giant three or four steps forward, so by the start of Panic, I was even with the main building. By the end of Panic, I was about 10 rows back. \o/

How was your weekend?

Glad you had fun!

I told Eryn I have this whole rant I keep wanting to do about why, even though I like Pretty.Odd. better than the old stuff, it kind of ticks me off in a lot of ways that are more serious that any reason I ever had to dislike Fever. :/

But this will never end (or begin) well.

We should talk about it sometime! I too have a lot of thoughts/issues with the album, beyond my expectations. But any way you slice it, it's decent music, at the end of the day. Plus or minus some moral outrage. ^_~

And thus you perfectly encapsulate everything that I also feel about Panic at the Disco in one simple phrase. Kudos, friend! I'm glad your show was so fun. :)

I have this vague memory that the drummer of Phantom Planet is Liev Schreiber's brother. RANDOM!

That is hilarious and random! I wonder if it's the current drummer or an old drummer. I can never remember their names, but there was some change-up action going on there somewhere, I think.

I think the original drummer, because I think he's in NY now doing theatre or something. I was a little obsessed with Liev a few years ago and it just kind of came up somewhere that his brother was in the band that wrote the OC song, that's all I know. (the brother's name is Pablo.)

It was a lot of fun!

I love how in that one they're basically echoing each others posture. ♥!! I have no words for how much the two of them please me.
