I scrolled past a canon versus fanon post on my flist, and that sort of thing always makes me giggle and sigh. Because I am the original fanon whore. My very first fandom was Gundam Wing, an anime that I never saw more than one episode of. I started reading Buffy fanfic loooooooooooong before season 7, which was the only season I've seen in it's entirety (and I've never seen any of Angel). I read lots and lots and lots of Due South, the Sentinel, and Smallville fic, and I've never seen even an episode of those shows. I consider Popslash to be my One True Fandom, in that it was home for so friggin' long and I don't think I'll ever stop loving all the truly AMAZING stories that were created there, and I've never been to a concert, bought an album, or watched more than a couple hours of fo. I love Harry Potter, but my main ships are Harry/Draco and Harry/Snape, neither of which are all that plausible giving the cannon we've got.

So, I guess my point is that I think canon is a nice jumping off point, but I don't see it as any more important that, and I really don't understand why people get so bent out of shape about it. So I giggle and sigh when I see people bitching about the lack of adherence to canon, because really. I just don't get it. I thought that was the best part of fanfic is that there you didn't have to follow the rules someone else made up, and you could write stories where completely improbable things happened and things were different. But maybe that's just me.
