omgsuchaweekend!
So, yeah. I went to two Cobra shows this weekend, and it was pretty fucking sweet, if exhausting. I went to the Friday show in Austin and the Saturday show in Houston. Both were awesome, in their own way. The crowd was a bit better in Austin, but the venue was far superior in Houston. And I still don't understand why teenies a) DON'T MOVE to the music, especially with bands like these and b) are completely incapable, individually or collectively, of just planting their fucking feet so as to not get shoved everyfuckingplace. But mostly I think they're a little bit adorable, because n'awww. They're doing what they're supposed to be doing at that age, I think. All the things I didn't do and am now doing to make up for lost time, only with more booze. Anyway.
I saw/met a TON of lovely fan-people, all of whom I found via
canadiankracka, and who let me hang and made room for me on the couch for some Life On The Murder Scene and Panic! DVD watching, and were kind enough to let me crash on their hotel room floor so I didn't have to try and drive back that night. I was delighted to find out that there's an extensive Texan fan contingent, it seems, many of whom may show up in Austin in a few weeks to see the Cab at SXSW. (Which I am V. EXCITED ABOUT, SO MANY BANDS TO STALK, ALSO, OVER MY SPRING BREAK!) [and despite my attempts to the contrary, I've COMPLETELY FORGOTTEN almost everyone's lj name, though most folks seem to have been able to fine me, so. HI! I was the one wearing (in order, but not simultaneously) the black long sleeved shirt with the gold stripes, the white short-sleeved shirt with yellow fleur-de-lis tank over, and the leave me alone shirt at breakfast. And driving the little green car.]
Driving back was something of an ordeal, because I was(am) still pretty tired, but I cranked up MCR and sang along at the top of my lungs and bought a bottle of water at the Slowest Gas Station Checkout Ever, and I didn't die, so I'm counting that one as a win.
Re: the actual concert experiences?
Warnings for self-indulgent rambling and LOTS of HUGE pictures.
The Cab
TINY. SO TINY. WORDS CANNOT EXPRESS HOW WEE THEY ARE. I am not actually sure that Ian is taller than I am, and I'm 5'4' on a good day. (Note: These shows made me feel fucking TALL. WTF.) They're fucking adorable, too. They have such a good time on stage. And they're better every time I see them. I'm very enthused to hear their album, and I have thinky thoughts on musical confluence and influence and I really want to sit down with Panic!'s new CD and The Cab's CD and have thinky thoughts. But suffice it to say that they all seem to be really swell humans and I tried to not be too awkward at them.
TRUEFAX: Some people have their fourth wall set on the line where the objects of their fiction read their fic. Mine is instead at the line where the band comes off stage and I'm supposed to talk to them. *AWKWARD* But yes. Maybe I'll get over it and be able to tell them that I like their music the next time I see them. They do seem like pretty nice humans.

Hi Marshall! Sorry about the flash IN YOUR FACE! I was just a few people back, it was pretty cool.

Singer's scarf AMUSES ME TO NO END. Somebody's been taking fashion tips from Ryan Ross!

Ian! Why so far away? ;_; He's pretty badass, is all I have to say.
And I took video of their cover of I'll Be, because IT AMUSED ME SO. File here, if you like. The sound is actually kind of okay.
We The Kings
Good rockin' out music. Also, the singer and lead guitarist? have hilarious stage banter. Also, watching them made me think that all the allegations of *stage gay* are possibly not all that off target. The crowd is mostly girls, mostly young, and they eat that shit up. On the other hand, it's cute as fucking hell. Their hair is ridic, in that I'm pretty sure none of them has seen a pair of scissors in SEVERAL years. Musically, they're not quite generic, but not quite blow-me-away-amazing. I'm thinking it's the lyrics. I'd like something a bit more than the usual lovesong shtick, and they're close to delivering, but not quite. Which makes it sound like I don't like them, but I do! I'm even willing to shell out for their CD. A++ Also, they have nice merch. I didn't end up getting a shirt as common sense prevailed, but if you were to get one, they're pretty decent-looking. And I got no post-worthy pictures of them. At all. *sighsigh*
Metro Station
OMFG are their songs catchy! And I (still) don't know their names, but they have a semi-FOB-esque band dynamic whereby the lead singer is not the frontman. Instead, it is the guy I'm assuming plays lead guitar, but I was actually a bit distracted by his arm full of tattoos, extravagant arm gestures, shweet hair, and facial piercings to really pay attention to that part. /shallow The lead singer also has pretty amazing hair, in that he has an UNBELIEVABLY WRETCHED HAIR CUT OMFG. Like. WORDS CANNOT EXPRESS MY DELIGHT AND IT'S WRETCHEDNESS. Think pageboy. Think blunt-cut pageboy, on the longish side, crossed with the emokid hair/bangs (which I learned at some point is what 'brooklyn haircut' refers to in that Cobra song, btw). It's fantastically amazing, especially when paired with this black leather biker-esque jacket that makes his shoulders look especially wide and his neck especially short. AMAZING. (Yeah, I bet you wanted to know that much about his hair. SUCH IS MY DELIGHT!)
Their music is also unbelievably inappropriate! In a fun way! But at some point on Saturday, I was looking at the barely teenagers around me, and thinking of their parents sitting in the back, as the crowd sings "you won't be seventeen forever" and "I wish we were older", and Mr. Frontman does some lewd pelvic thrusts. On the one hand, 0.o. On the other hand, it's pretty cool of their parents to be taking them to concerts at all at that age, and they're not my kids, so what the fuck ever. But yes with the INAPPROPRIATE SONGS THAT ARE SO ENJOYABLE ANYWAY. Also, all of their merch is V.V. 80's redux, which I find awesome, in a way that also sort of makes me feel old which is strange.
These are barely worth it, but whatever.

He's got some pretty serious tattoo action going on. And every single picture I got was him with his hair in his face. Fine, be that way!

This is the dude with the haircut of complete wretch-dom. But you aren't getting the full effect because you aren't seeing it with the leather jacket. But yeah, fucking adorable.
COBRA STARSHIP OMFG
I had only seen them once prior to this on HCT when Gabe fucking blew me away with his awesome, and they did not disappoint, except that I wish their set was longer and that they played It's Warmer, but they did play everything else, including Hot Addiction, where I got to pump my fist a lot and throw up my fangs! Gabe and Ryland have this cute little intro they do for Hot Addiction, I don't remember it all, but something about "who has seen us before, blahblah, vaguely creepy religious references, but anyone can join our ultra-extra-exclusive club. Put your fist in the air, and say HEY HEY HEY" and then they bust that shit out! On Saturday, since I knew what was coming, I threw up my fangs during the intro and I'm choosing to believe that Ryland was pointing at me when he said "Yes, like that, someone knows" or something to that effect. /teenie
Ever since I read this primer on Gabe, I've been more than a little in love with Being From Jersey Means Never Having To Say You're Sorry, and for their encore, Gabe came out and played that with beautiful help from Ryland and later Alex and Nate. And then they played Guilty Pleasure and I didn't want them to ever be done.
Other Cobra Notes:
- Gabe fucking loves Victoria. He's alllllll over her!
- On Saturday, some girl in the crowd near VickyT shouts out something about Nate being hot, and she STOPS THE ENTIRE FUCKING SHOW to tell Gabe this, and he then goes on to talk about how NO SHIT NATE'S HOT, TELL US SOMETHING WE DON'T KNOW. It was hilarious! Gabe being kinda sarcastic and bitchy is hilarious.
- Gabe gyrating and lifting his shirt on "I can be a nasty guy" is alternately hilarious and hot.

We are ready to get our Cobra blessed, now.

Gabe: super sweaty and wearing funny glasses and obsessed with Victoria

I know it's completely cheesy, but I love her so much for being a girl in a band. Fullstop. LOVE.

We are about to join the Church of Hot Addiction. *DORK*

Seriously, almost every picture I tried to get of VickyT, Gabe stepped right on in there.

VickyT!

I had to include this one, because I still don't understand why you'd wear a freaking hoodie on stage when it's obviously that hot. VickyT doesn't understand either.

Somebody threw this shirt up on stage. They seemed pretty pleased.

I still can't get over his glasses!

Happy face!

Saturday was Ryland's day to wear doofy glasses. These were glow in the dark!

I love Gabe's face when he's performing. Completely delighted and bemused!

Hi Ryland, Hi!

She was wearing yellow arm warmers!

I have no idea what is happening in this picture, but it's hilarious!

Hi Gabe, hi!

When he was thanking the openers, Gabe made Singer come out and made fun of his hair. It was kind of adorable.

VickyT is actually a robot with laser eyes, and will commence destroying the world in 5..4..3..2..1...

It's really cute, when ever she sings, she puts her hand up to her in-ear so she can hear better, I guess. Why do I find that so cute?

Gabe's gold microphone! ahahaa!

Ryland is unamused by all these shenanigans, and insists you cease that nonsense immediately!
Being From Jersey Means Never Having To Say You're Sorry
*deep breath* And that's how my weekend was! The only downside is that I seem to have lost one of my little black star earrings, but worse has happened, and I'm pretty sure the internet or someone can hook me up with a similar pair, what with all things emo still somewhat in fashion.
And I have the most adorable post-breakfast fangirl pile picture consisting of
sixwhitelies,
sunn_doyouknow,
canadiankraka, and someone who I'm 99% certain is
txtequilanights. I don't want to post w/o asking, 'cause I know folks don't like that, but if you want the pic, I can email it!
And in other awesome news, I LOVE frontgate tickets, because they mail you your ticket RIGHT AWAY, so I now have my MCR ticket in my hot little hands, as well as my Panic ticket for Austin. \o/ And apparently the Used is going to the same venue? I'm actually kind of curious to see them live. And LADYTRON is going to be there in June! *loves austin*

Date: 2008-02-28 04:04 am (UTC)I'm going to draw up a list, and see what happens, so I think it'll be a good time! I really only have my heart set on Jens Leckman and The Cab (with the Hushies!) so far, none of whom are super-famous, so it might be easy enough to get in.
