IDEFK, you guys. I just need something to read. And it's all over my pinboard subscriptions and network. :( I. ugh.

Date: 2012-09-10 06:28 am (UTC)OK, so I think my personal problem with the way a lot of people who write Natasha is tied to one of the reasons I (and many slashers) read (or write slash). A lot of times, things are just a little too close to home when it's a lady and a dude instead of two dudes. So a lot of the times when she is written romantically just don't really strike me as true for her. Like, she is not a woman who ever worries about her attractiveness unless it's whether or not she's made a mistake about her mark preferring brunettes or blondes. I also just don't see her relaxing enough to have non-coning-a-mark/getting close to assassinate someone sex, and hardly anyone ever gets the kind of set up where I would believe that she actually wants it for romantic reasons instead of other motivations. And she doesn't really seem like to sort who needs or wants to ever give up control at all ever, and as a lady, there's a lot of that inherent in the dynamics that many people use when writing porn about a dude and lady having sex.
Also, I don't like it when she is written as 'too normal'. Like, I don't actually know a ton about her background, and a lot of her characterization in the movie IS relatively normal/casual/etc, but the fic that resonates the most for me are the ones where she is characterized as somewhat fundamentally altered by her history/training/background. She is not always cold and ruthless, but that is a large element of her personality, but she seems like she should be constantly calculating the people around her. She does not have the 'typical' concerns that would be appropriate characterizations of other women around her.
So I guess I just feel like she is too obviously an avatar for the person writing her in many stories, which is just a) uncomfortable on several levels and b) not as interesting for me.
