https://gimmebar.com/ is a new bookmarking/saving thingie, emphasis on the saving. IDK if it would be any good for fic-bookmarking as the tag support is pretty weak, near as I can tell, but it does allow you to save pages/pictures/videos/stuff, so your link never 'breaks', similar to the Pinboard archive option. I definitely prefer Pinboard/Delicious for fic-bookmarking with the tags upfront and center to how you find things, but it might make a nice alternative to Pinterest as you can save more than just images. It also does the 'collections'/board/whatever thing so you can broadly group things, as well as tag them. It will also do backups of twitter/delicious/pinboard/instagram. Signups are open through 11/20.

I think it was all the Being Lazy yesterday, and counter intuitively, it made it that much harder to get going this morning. But I persevered, and I am at work and I ate food and everything. Not that I've accomplished much, but I'm here!

I've been also reading all the OTW election stuff, and mostly it is making me really sad for all the volunteers, and also mildly Horrified in a second-hand way at some of the things People Who Seem Like They Should Know are saying about best practices for things like code branching and releases and time keeping/keeping tax-exempt status (I'm linking to a specific thread, but the rest of the comments above that thread/on that entry are relevant) that the OTW is NOT doing. /o\

*goes to do actual work now*

I will just say though that when you are advertising your fic as a fluffy romp through a new sexual adventure, it should probably not spend 1/4 of the fic in an extended conversation where one character relentlessly badgers the other that NO REALLY THEY REALLY SHOULD DO THIS SEXUAL THING THEY HAVE DISLIKED IN THE PAST. Shit is Not. Okay. And furthermore, I realize you thought it would be hot and reinforce the consensual-sens of the encounter to have the do-ee tell the do-er to keep going at every step, but it actually feels really weird and creepy at this point.

ETA: And it's even worse when the do-ee is very obviously the feminine avatar, both in this fic and in fandom in general. /o\

Failed out of that one HARD.

This entry was going to be called MONIES HOW DO THEY WORK but then my laptop decided to not boot and I about had a heart attack. It would go like it was going to load the BIOS, and just. Hang. Granted, I didn't just let it sit there for a long time, but I was busy FREAKING OUT. I took almost everything apart, and tried again and no dice. So I went to bed and googled furiously.

This morning, the BIOS decided to behave itself, but it was cranking at me about the amount of memory having changed and still wouldn't boot windows. /o\ But this morning's googling yielded excellent results about resetting the BIOS (typically needed because someone set a BIOS password and then forgot what it was). To do so, you just need to pull the all power including the inner battery (the one that looks like a watch battery) for 5 minutes, and VOILA. BIOS loaded, windows booted, including my hibernation (hibernated?) session, THERE WAS GREAT REJOICING.

The thing I was going to write about... MONEY (and taxes and being a commie socialist) )

To make up for the disaster that was this morning, I made myself go grocery shopping tonight. I bought organic milk again (yummmm), a bunch of bars so I eat breakfast like a real human, an impulse-eggplant, hummus + veggies for dipping, and ALL THE 50% OFF CANDY CORN. \o/ LIKE A BOSS

Then I semi-failed to make the meal I was planning on out of laziness, but I did eat some hummus and veg like a real adult human.

The eggplant makes me kinda want to try my hand at making babaganoush (spelling SO DUBIOUS). Or steal that cookbook of [livejournal.com profile] katieupsidedown's for that one recipe.

Man, crossposting has interesting drawbacks. Icon that goes with this entry:

So delicious has 'restored tag bundles' except for THAT IS NOT HOW TAG BUNDLES ARE SUPPOSED TO WORK.

When you click on a tag bundle? IT DISPLAYS ALL THE LINKS THAT ARE TAGGED WITH ANY OF THE TAGS IN THE BUNDLE.

YOU KNOW WHAT IS USELESS?

You get three guesses, the first two don't count, and the answer is right above the question. Also, there is still no way to display the tag bundles on your user page, rendering them STILL USELESS. (and as an aside, I like how the UI is so completely fucked that it takes me like 5 clicks and a bunch of scrolling to do what used to take me 2 clicks, 3 TOPS.)

Joyously, the first time I clicked on the 'tag bundle' page, I was shown NO TAG BUNDLES, so I tried to make a new tag bundle for all the authors, except apparently my tag bundles WERE there, they were just hiding, and by making a new bundle with the same name as an old one, I destroyed the old one.

Also, the page or my laptop is being wonky and it will not let me click links in the middle-to-bottom section of the page on that page so I can't add tags to the new bundle very effectively.

But that last bit doesn't even matter because some FUCKING GENIUS decided that only the epically LONG list of tags on the right hand side should scroll, and the designed-for-toddlers aesthetic caries through, so the left portion of the screen with the box that all the tags show up in has the font size set to LARGE and DOESN'T SCROLL so when you add to many tags, you have no way of getting to the 'save' button anyway.

GOOD WORK GUYS

*drink heavily*

Things that are officially disgusting: 'sour cream' that has 12 ingredients in it (I counted).

Things that are even more disgusting: the actual sour cream that has 1 ingredient? costs nearly twice what the 'sour cream' does. *weeps forever*

Also, the 'sour cream' tastes disgusting, but that might be me just being a food snob.

In related food snobbery, there is this great little potato chip company back home that used to make these amazing 'old-fashioned' potato chips that were fried in peanut oil. Holy fuck they were good. Tragically, they stopped making those and their current old-fashioned line is not as good, though they do still make a 'kettle-cooked' chip that is nice and thick and crunchy, but they just aren't the same. And now I live in the land of ALL TORTILLA ALL THE TIME NO POTATO FOR YOU LOSER chips, and while they are indeed delicious, there is nothing like a nice potato chip in onion sour cream dip, and all my potato options down here are decidedly sub-par and fucking expensive to boot.

My life = so hard.

This post is brought to you by the fact that I forgot to pack a fork and thus could not eat half of my lunch today.

Okay, so I don't usually do this, but this is an issue near and dear to me and this is getting very little no attention in the mainstream media.

Mississippi is voting on November 8th on whether to pass Amendment 26, the "Personhood Amendment". This amendment would grant fertilized eggs and fetuses personhood status.

Putting aside the contentious issue of abortion, this would effectively outlaw birth control and criminalize women who have miscarriages. This is not a good thing.

Jackson Women's Health Organization is the only place women can get abortions in the entire state, and they are trying to launch a grassroots movement against this amendment. This doesn't just apply to Mississippi, though, as Personhood USA, the group that introduced this amendment, is trying to introduce identical amendments in all 50 states.

What's more, in Mississippi, this amendment is expected to pass. It even has Mississippi Democrats, including the Attorney General, Jim Hood, backing it.

The reason I'm posting this here is because I made a meager donation to the Jackson Women's Health Organization this morning, and I received a personal email back hours later - on a Sunday - thanking me and noting that I'm one of the first "outside" people to contribute.

So if you sometimes pass on political action because you figure that enough other people will do something to make a difference, make an exception on this one. My RSS reader is near silent on this amendment. I only found out about it through a feminist blog. The mainstream media is not reporting on it.

If there is ever a time to donate or send a letter in protest, this would be it.

What to do?

- Read up on it. Wake Up, Mississippi is the home of the grassroots effort to fight this amendment. Daily Kos also has a thorough story on it.

- If you can afford it, you can donate at the site's link.

- You can contact the Democratic National Committee to see why more of our representatives aren't speaking out against this.

- Like this Facebook page to help spread awareness.

As a whole, I find the concept of the TED talks a bit ridiculous/patronizing/so 1.0, but on an individual basis, they do end up quite interesting, at least in the moment I'm watching them.

Education, group learning, fandom collective action, creativity and inspiration! You know you want to read it )

Tenuously related to the above, I want to briefly pimp ItunesU/Open Courseware/etc. While a lot of the most popular stuff is geared toward computer education, there are a TON of college classes FREE over a very wide array of subjects (including languages), and they are kind of fun and useful. In my dreamiest of dreams, there would be a fandom com dedicated to 'taking' classes together, because I am a gigantic nerd like that. I'm currently watching an intro computer science course from Stanford (Programming Methodology, if anyone cares), and the prof is very engaging, if nothing else.

---

And on a slightly administrative note, I wrote a brief and completely incomplete overview of using RSS readers to substitute for the old Delicious Network page. If that is a thing any of you want to do and you have any questions or run into problems, I cannot promise to be able to answer them at all, but I will do my best to help!

In personal news, I'm going to start 'volunteering' at my theoretical job either Friday or Monday (and I have to spend the intervening time giving myself a pep talks about having a concrete money conversation no matter how much I don't want to) and build up some serious off-record vacation time. I will use this vacation time to take off some extra time over the holidays and most importantly, most of the SXSW week. *\o/*

The whole delicious disaster has brought a MAJOR thing to my attention that I never thought to apply to fucking tech reporting, but learn something new every day. You know how when the mainstream media reports on something, they pull out the 'fair to both points of view' even when one of the points of view is coming from a rabid bear with a compulsive lying problem. And both 'points of view' are often regurgitated verbatim with absolutely ZERO analysis or fact-checking or ANY hint that anything that either party is saying might not be 100% true or accurate.

Yeah, the tech world does that with an incredibly irritating overlay of fawning sycophantery. (Is that even a word? NO. Do I even care? NO.)

cut for some ranting \o/ )

I will leave you with this super-great quote from some dude whose name I may or may not be supposed to recognize at AVOS:
We’ve been focused on making the transition from Yahoo happen as fast as possible. Because of this, we needed to reduce some functionality in the short term and introduce a basic set of new features to get the site out the door. From our standpoint, it’s a competitive market and we’re going to err on the side of speed versus perfection to hopefully build a larger, more compelling experience. We’ll always be listening to the community and will literally be updating the product on a daily basis.”

My Interpretation:
We planned it this way all along, we made absolutely no study of who used the old service or how those people actually used it, it was kind of an impulse purchase, we don't actually care about the gagillion people who've already saved massive numbers of curated bookmarks with us, we're hoping to drive them off and keep the data to make a facebook wannabe that we can slap keyword ads all over and then sell to some sucker a la youtube. And yeah, we can't code our way out of a paper bag, hopefully the site will actually start working eventually. But not too soon, don't want those 'non-mainstream' users coming back to use their data!

IDK, I still think it'll mostly come back eventually. Emphasis on eventually. Long after the daily users have fucked off.
drunkoffthestars: by doitninetimes, not for sharing (COBRA - fangs up!)
I've had the delicious plugin installed, and since yahoo tried to force that wretched redesign of the popup/old bookmarker, I've been running the plugin in advanced mode.

Today, for no apparent reason, it decided to completely fuck over Firefox )

Enough. I'm going to go read something extra fluffy courtesy of Pinboard (ps my username is doitninetimes, and if I ever figure out a clean way to pull rss feeds + tags and all metadata from them, I'll let you know for ppl who are into finding fic that way)

And really, I truly believe that at some point delicious will be back to being functional, but in the mean time, I'm going to get my money's worth out of pinboard, so idek if there will be a point to trying to keep up my account, which would be sad. Sept 2005, you guys. That's when I first bookmarked an ancient popslash story on delicious.
drunkoffthestars: (Default)
For those still trying to get their bookmarks: THIS WORKS. Thanks [personal profile] brownbetty! I think it should work even if your data isn't showing up on the new website, but don't quote me on that. When in doubt, keep refreshing until it works?

NOTE: if you are having trouble editing the hosts file in windows, rightclick --> properties and check if the 'read-only' box is ticked. Also, if you run Spybot/Tea Timer, you will need to disable it before you can edit the file.

Also, I like how someone finally clued in to the fact that having a rabid horde of ANGRY ANGRY MONKEYS spewing bile everywhere about how you can't code your way out of a paper bag was maybe NOT the best situation to be in. Reading between the lines, it sounds like they really did just buy all the user info and none of the software. /o\ christ almighty.

I'd also like to know who decided to make it a whole different blogspot blog instead of posting on either of their own websites. /cynic

And if you are using/planning on using pinboard, fandom-in-general is collecting suggestions/requests here. AWW FANDOM, I JUST WANT TO PINCH YOUR CUTE LITTLE CHEEKS! Some ideas are less *ahem* realistic than others, but go put your two cents in if you are planning on using the service.

Oh, and my favorite comment since this whole thing got going:
people tweeting about @Delicious seem to be in two camps: the Pissed Off and the marketing people.
Um. Yeah.

THINGS THAT WILL BE HILARIOUS WHEN THEY FIGURE OUT WHAT IT MEANS
The Pinboard twitter posted this morning:
Really enjoying the HN vs. fanfic collision on the /popular/ page. Enjoy this, founders, it's as close to real women as some of you will get

And I did take a look and chorttle a moment (despite also being mildly annoyed). And then I realized that their 'most popular bookmark? Has *147* bookmarks. Most of them only have 20-40. If fandom does complete the migration there, SOME PEOPLE ARE GOING TO BE VERY SURPRISED BY WHAT THEIR POPULAR LINKS PAGE WILL TURN INTO. Like, popular stories can have 20 bookmarks EASILY. And I know the scale is going to be a bit reduced because not everyone can/will make the jump, but LULZ. They have no idea what is coming if fandom continues to heavily use their site.

The other thing that will be hilarious is when we convert old pinterest users to our fanish ways. >:D

THINGS I AM FIGURING OUT
If you don't have a Pinterest account and are disinclined to buy one, you can still access bookmarks from users and site-wide tags via RSS feeds. How to make that actually work, IDEK, but it is a thing that can happen. At the very least, if you use Google Reader, you should be able to pull things in. I've seen some comments about Google Reader not displaying tags, but I'm sure we can figure something out.

CONTINUED PROGRAMMING EDUCATION IS ... INTERESTING
Uh, so. Let's face it, I have no idea what I'm doing, but I got the Ruby Script to pull my bookmarks with the correct dates to run without error messages, but, uh, nothing else happened? I think I'm missing a dependency of some sort, and it said something about getting the developer version of Ruby, not just the 'run stuff' version, so we'll see what's what later today I think.

MAKING OUR OWN
This is apparently still something [personal profile] rageprufrock is trying to get off the ground. Send her your email address if you're interested in helping out! If you want to keep updated on the progress of said project, you can follow her twitter, and I assume she'll post about it on her journal.

FOR FOLKS USING PINBOARD
Here are some useful links. I don't really like what the 'cleanup' scripts do, but the favicon one is A++.

SOME PRETTY GREAT THINGS ABOUT USING NEW BROKEN DELICIOUS
So, (after clinking on the first thing they told me was a bookmarklet, only to have it send me elsewhere for a new bookmarklet) I bookmarked a new thing on delicious. And you want to hear the awesome part? THERE ARE NO SCROLL BARS ON THE POPUP WINDOW. NO. SCROLL. BARS. *dies laughing*

LULZ NO SCROLL BARS

All that white space? DOESN'T REALLY WORK FOR THOSE OF US WHO ARE WORKING ON 12.1 INCH LAPTOP SCREENS. *dies forever of both hilarity and irritation*

Other than that, it... worked? I mean, there was no evidence of autocomplete, but I saved a bookmark? And I was prepared for the comma thing?

But really, my favorite feature is how when you stack two bookmarks you've made, you don't see the tags. That is a really A++GENIOUS idea right there.

AND THE CHERRY ON TOP
The First 20 Hours according to dome dude who works there. I like how they are So! Positive! All! The! Time! they can't even be bothered to apologize to all the people they freaked out or acknowledge in some minor way that it was a complete disaster.

1. THE FAINTEST RAY OF HOPE.

So, while I find other explanations much more likely and plausible, given my experience over the last 10 years with the internet, there are some more benign and hopeful responsibilities for why delicious has suddenly turned into such a shitshow.

Apparently, when Yahoo! bought del.icio.us, they
"rebuilt the entire infrastructure to deeply leverage a number of internal Yahoo technologies. It’s all great stuff but not exactly easy to remove or replace. Yahoo may have to license some of this technology to the buyer. I’m not sure they’ve done that before."

Assuming this is true, and assuming that Yahoo! wanted to, dump Delicious asap, and wasn't interested in licensing the technology (or the buyers weren't interested in paying for it), that means that they've been re-writing Delicious from scratch and this is as far as they've gotten by Yahoo!'s deadline. And I'm not the only one who has come up with this, so that's something?

And of course, if they're re-writing everything, it isn't going to be nearly as well tested as older code, so of course there are going to be about a bajillion errors (though that doesn't excuse the 'not escaping special characters, particularly the /' (assuming that was not an act of malice to get rid of users who do not fit their target demographic/usage group).

They do have a list of 'future features' that are supposed to exist at some point in the future, and I think if those features do end up happening, that'll take care of 90% of the complaints, and everything will be sunshine and roses! Yay!

2. MAKING THE SHITSHOW WORK FOR YOU )

3. ALTERNATIVES )

4. ANOTHER (DISTANT) OPTION. BUILD IT OURSELVES. )

5. FINDING THE LOST NETWORK

Ok, this is a tiny bit beautiful. Google spreadsheet for finding where the folks on your network are/are going. Well over 5,000 ppl have accessed, though only ~100 have entered any info (understandable, it was RT'd by the Pinboard twitter), but people! You can find them!

You may or may not know (or care), but Delicious is kinda 100% fuxored right now.

PROBLEM 1: I tried to export today, and the dates are all fucked up when I import into Pinboard. ) SOLVED! Sorta. The date number is a decimal integer that represents the number of seconds elapsed since midnight January 1, 1970. *headdesk* I would really like to know who came up with THAT bright idea.

If I ever have something terrible happen to me? Please please please do not ever say 'everything happens for a reason' to me. Please. Because I will want to punch you in the face. Or even if I have something great happen to me. Just never say anything that means that to me ever.

In other news, I just saw wank on a kinkmeme where someone wanted an author to warn for het. *headdesk* x infinity. /o\ Srsly, the actual fuck? And there was another thing where someone commented to an anon author about the 'quality declining' on their fill. WHO ARE YOU PEOPLE?! Apparently, the Suits kinkmeme is full of assholes. Which, come to think of it, shouldn't surprise me quite that much as my impression from a lot of the fic is that is is a semi-young and/or first-fandom fandom for many people. But still. /o\

In other other news, if you are into Suits fic, I would like to recommend [archiveofourown.org profile] Closer. The Pizza-verse is incredibly charming, and gives me multiple POV's, including an outsider POV, which is one of my all-time favorite things. Floor 37 is also pretty great. I am also a sucker for sekrit identity fic. \o/

And I feel like I've linked this before, but I can't find it, so if you like Gundam Wing, or Stargate, or crossovers, you should totally read Upon A Fiery Steed by Vathara. The Gundam-universe is a bit more drastically AU than the Stargate, but I love how she's meshed the two together, and I LOVE what she's done with GW. I could read ALL THE FIC in that universe. Tragically, there isn't any more, but it does re-read very well for me.
